Why Relationship Marketing?

Tip #2-01, January 2002

When the crowd can no longer hear you above the din of the marketplace, the crowd will pass you by.

Relationship marketing means to think of yourself and your firm as having clients, not just acquiring customers. This means that you should market to protect your customer base, not just to build on it with new sales. This becomes critical as more and more of your competitors vie with you for your clients’ dollars.

Not every client receives and understands every message you send out — but the messages that you customize to each client’s personal needs and idiosyncrasies will make the biggest impact for you.

So Relationship marketing means attracting, maintaining and enhancing client relationships. Servicing and continuing to sell to your existing clients is just as important to your long-term success as acquiring new clients.

The secret is:

  • to implement specific communication strategies that are meaningful to your clients, such as sending out bulletins with timely information your clients count on you to deliver…

  • to differentiate yourself from your competitors by highlighting your special skills, talents and expertise, and by doing this…

  • make it very difficult for your competitors to duplicate or improve upon what you deliver to your clients.

So relationship marketing means nurturing customized relationships that capture your clients’ hearts and minds by attending to their unique personal needs and desires. And it takes little more than great contact management.

In relationship marketing, timely, effective contact management turns mere customers into loyal clients who feel compelled to get their financial counsel and advice from you –– from only you.
